A TXT record, as the abbreviation implies, is a record, that holds information in human-readable form and not code. It can be set up for a domain or a subdomain for many different purposes. Search engines, for example, have different ways of verifying you are the owner of a certain domain and one of them is actually by creating a TXT record with unique text which they provide and that you need to use as the record value. The exact same verification method is used by some analytics platforms that monitor the traffic to your web sites as well. However, in this situation the content of the record is going to be read by a robot, but it will still be in human-readable form. A TXT record is furthermore employed when you activated the so-called SPF protection for your e-mails so that you can protect them from being forged. In such a case, the record contains info showing that a certain digital message is sent from a reliable and authorized mail server. You could use a TXT record for any kind of other information as well, just like your company details, for example.
